Contemplatio, Fr. Joseph Mary Lugemwa, OSB
The whole reason we pray is to be united into vision and contemplation of Him to whom we pray. We come then to the fourth step of Lectio Divina which is Contemplatio. In here we seek the union of love that should result from our dialogue with God. Here everything, as it were, reaches a still point .. a quality of silence, when all that we do is gaze lovingly at the person of our Lord God as He is revealed in the mystery of the Biblical passage before us.
This is meant to be a consummation of the union of our mind and heart to the truth of the mysteries of God. A kind of mystical union, and this consummation can be neither hurried nor forced. It takes the act of God to make this union a reality. We need to give ample time in silence to this undistracted attention to the word and we may go through this process without even being aware of what is taking place.
No one who has ever been in love needs to be reminded that there are moments in loving relationships when words are unnecessary. It is the same in our relationship with God. Wordless, quiet rest in the presence of the one who loves us. Because the Lord is with us, we can relax and let go of everything for in His presence nothing really matters, nothing is of importance except attending to Him.
For the best results; Be silent and listen.
