      Retreat Reading

   I have been reading this paperback this summer. I picked it up in late May just as our monastic community was  leaving for our annual weeklong Retreat. I find it inspirational, instructive, and an enjoyable read.

     Soon after his conversion Augustine prayed “O God, let me know myself; let me know you.” He was convinced that we eventually discover God by discovering our selves. In    “Let me know myself …”     Reflections on the Prayer of Augustine Fr. Donald X. Burt, O.S.A. reflects on what Augustine said about the nature of the “self” and obstacles that stand in the way of discovery, and some of the facts one can learn from experience and faith about oneself.
Fr. Burk is a professor emeritus in philosophy at Villanova University.
